http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=503

HELLO EVERYONE-

AS I PROMISED YOU ALL, I WILL HAVE PICTURES OF MY WW II PT BOAT BASE AT TULAGI.

THESE PHOTOS WERE TAKE BY KATHY ULSHAFER THE WIFE OF BOB ULSHAFER WHO IS A MEMBER MY SHIP MODEL CLUB.

THESE PHOTOS SHOW MY DIORAMA IN A SLIDE SHOW! THE ENTIRE DIORAMA COVERS SIX BANQUET TABLES ALONG WITH THE DOCUMENTATION.

THE STRUCTURE SHOWN WITH THE ROOF REMOVED IS THE SICK BAY ON THE ISLAND OF TULAGI. THE INTERIOR IS COMPLETELY DETAILED RIGHT DOWN TO THE BED PANS, INJURED IN THEIR BUNKS, MEDICAL STAFF AND SURIGAL ROOM. THE FRONT 2/3RDS OF THE BUILDING IS THE SICK BAY THE REAR 1/3RD IS THE SURIGAL ROOM!

THERE ARE THREE PT BOATS SHOWN 169 IN ZEBRA STRIPES, THE 196 AND THE 176 IN THE FLOATING DRYDOCK.

I MUST MENTION HERE AND NOW, THAT THIS ENTIRE DIORAMA "FLOATS'!! THE DIORAMA IS INTERACTIVE WITH THE RADIO CONTROLLED PT BOAT MODELS! THERE IS AN UNDERLAYMENT OF THICK STRYOFOAM UNDER EACH SECTION. EACH SECTION WAS BUILT LIKE A SURF BOARD. I CAN PLACE THIS ENTIRE DIORAMA IS SAY A POND, A CALM LAKE OR AT POOLSIDE, TURN ON THE TRANSMITTER FOR THE PT'S AND IT'S LIKE WW II IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC ALL OVER AGAIN WITH ONE BIG EXCEPTION! NO ONE GET WOUNDED AND EVERYONE GETS TO GO HOME!!!

THIS DIORAMA HAS TAKEN ME MORE THEN 10 YEARS TO BUILD. THERE IS A LOT OF SCRATCHBUILDING ON THE DIORAMA DUE TO THE SIMPLE FACT THAT MODEL COMPANIES SEEM TO HAVE FORGOTTEN COMPLETELY ABOUT THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC. WORKING FROM THE ACTUALL PHOTOGRAPHS THAT WERE SENT TO ME BY THE VETERANS THEMSELVES I WAS ABLE TO REPLICATE IN MINIATURE THIS HISTORIC ONE OF A KIND DISPLAY!

THE SCALE OF THE DIORAMA IS 1/32 OR 3/8" = 1 FOOT ANYWHERE ON THE DIORAMA!

I WISH TO THANK ALL PT BOAT VETERANS, THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS WHO HAVE SENT ME PHOTOS OVER THE YEARS SO THAT THIS DIORAMA CAN BE DOCUMENTED. WITHOUT THEIR HELP THIS PROJECT WOULD HAVE NEVER COME TO LIGHT!

HERE IS THE WEB SITE ADDRESS TO VIEW THE DIORAMA-

Incredible! You have patience I'll never have. It looks great...good job! I especially like that the display has depth to it...there are a lot of little things here and there, not just a couple of boats and a dock. Thanks for sharing...fantastic display.

Hi Frank.

Unfortunately the photos posted at Photobucket in October 2007 are no longer available because that account is inactive according to the message here from that date.

Is there any way to repost those images?

Cheers from Peter

No, you do not go down that far. View Fank R's original post, which is the first one out of the barell. You can see the highlighted field in blue or the link. Click on it and it will take you to another site. Scroll all the way down and you can view 5 pictures of the Diorama..........

Hi there again Frank.

I'm not talking about the images at http://www.boobyhatchnews.blogspot.com but the three images posted at Photobucket by Frank's daughter Chaos Dragon 23 and mentioned in a post here on October 24, 2007 at 2:47 pm. Unless theyare the same images as the five at http://www.boobyhatchnews.blogspot.com that is.

Cheers from Peter

Hi ya Ted-

I'm LOL because when I tell you what I used, I can see you slapping your hand upsides your head and say" Dang, why didn't I ever think of that??"

I'm a very frugal modeler, Ted, and I'll use whatever I have at hand. Actually, ready, it's foam shelf matting that you put into a kitchen cabinet or an RV to keep the dishes from rolling around.

I saw this stuff in the ol' Dollar store and went. Hmmmmmmm! I rolled a piece and sprayed it with a can of Wal-Mart flat black that was on sale for 88 cents a can. I told you I was frugal, right! Then I high lighted with dry brushed silver then again with Testor's flat rust then a heavy coat of Dullcoat and Viola, done!

Frank;
Well that is awesome! I used some old venting material that you would use in the eves of your house, but I think they discontinued this type, it was plastic and that was about 20 years ago. Thanks I'll keep my eyes peeled.
Take care,

Frank: Just amazing all the work that went into this. I would love to see it in person. However I didn't see the sign on the dock "Through These Portals Pass the Best MTB Flotilla in the World" which I remember very well walking under.

Hiya CjJ-

Thank you very much for the kind words!

I just sent Frank Andruss a lot of pictures of the subject matter for the new Green Island -Pt374 diorama I have been working on.In this grouping of photographs there are a few shots of a new method for making 'true scale' palm trees.

Right now, as it stands there are well over 200 palm trees on my diorama. In lighthouse terms I want to casll these palm trees fourth order trees. They look OK from a distance , but don't really shine.

These new trees are fantastic. In fact I am in the process of making 5 1/2 dozen of these "new" palm trees for the Green Island project.

As for the 200 + trees presently on my diorama, they will be replaced slowly but surely. The old trees that you see on the diorama took me anywhere from 5-10 minutes to make one tree. With the new technique one tree takes 2 1/2 hours complete right down to the scale coconuts!
Multiply that X 200+ new palm trees and I'm going to be very busy for a loooong time!

Yes, I know about the missing sign, CJ! I have plans on making one but every time I say I will, something comes up and I forget about the sign. Thanks for the reminder and the sign will be added ASAP!

Hello everybody-

I have a few things that I forgot to mention in the post previous to this one.

I have had a few members of this message contact me when they were in the Jacksonville, Florida area. Actually I'm in the Mandarin section of Jacksonville. If you are ever in the area or passing through to go to Disney World or points further south, I want to tell you guys, the welcome mat is ALWAYS out! I'll do my best to set up my diorama in my workshop/ garage at the drop of a hat! I love showing my "BABY" off!

While talking with Frank Andruss the other night rergarding the posting of the diorama pictures on this message board, ol' Frank suggested that I cut the PT's off at the water line!!!!!! I CAN"T DO THAT!!

First and foremost, the 169 boat was the first thing that gave me the old "shot in the arm" so to speak. I built her for my next door neighbor who served on the 169. The model is radio controlled!! The other two boats will also be radio controlled!!

Now here's the big "KICKER" folks! This entire diorama--- "FLOATS"!!!!

The whole diorama is actually interactive with my fleet of R/C PT's. Each seperate section, and now there are seven including the dry dock, fuel barge, CB heavy equipment barge, beach head, sick bay section, main pier section, and main back drop section, all have stryofoam incorporated into the section.

Although I havn't put this diorama into the water in several years, Ol' Frank A. has given me another shot in the arm and I'm going to have to get you guys some shots of this lay out in the pond at one of my R/C clubs upcoming regattas. It's a lot of work setting this thing up at a pond site, but the whole kit and kaboodle looks awesome!

Thanks guys!
