Hello Shipmates,
It is with much sadness that one of our WW2 PT Boat Vets active on PT658 Save the PT Boat, Maurice "Maury" Hooper, MoMM 3/c of PT238 of RON20, has sadly taken his "Last Patrol". Maury also served as a past President of our group, and was a true PT Boat Ambassador. He helped spread the word of the PT Boats and the men who served on them to everyone he met. He was honored most recently with visiting the WW2 memorial in Washington DC on an Honor Flight this last March. Maury is also the subject of a recent Biography Titled
“Wooden Boats & Iron Men: A World War II Sailor’s Life Story and His Passion"to Help Save One of the Last Surviving PT Boats.” by noted author Lilly Robbins Brock. The 148-page book chronicles Hooper’s life and how his “love of the motor torpedo boat” has lasted over 70 years. The book is now available in softcover or e-book on Amazon.

Maury;s funeral service took place at his church in Longview Washington last Saturday and was attended by the majority of the PT658 Crew in his honor. He will be greatly missed,

Jerry

Jerry;
Please pass on my condolences to the entire crew of PT 658. Also, Thank you for asking Maury to sign my retirement certificate that accompanied my flag. It is my honor to have his name on it, and my flag that flew on his last boat, PT 658 RON 45.
Requiem
Under the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you grave for me;
"Here he lies where he longed to be,
Home is the sailor, home from sea,
And the hunter home from the hill."
-Robert Louis Stevenson-

Fair winds and following seas to MoMM 3/C Maury Hooper, USNR, PT 238 RON 20/PT 658 RON 45

Sorry for your loss Jerry,
You're very lucky to know these guys and have them as part of your PT 658 family. So hard to lose them.

Jerry and the crew of the 658 our sincere condolences, we had the pleasure of meeting Maury on our two visits to Portlands during Fleet Week.
What a genuine great guy, so sorry to hear of his passing.

I haven't been on the forum for awhile, I came on to see if there was anything about Alyce Guthrie. I called HQ to just catch up with her and the voice message said she had been in a bad car wreck. Any one know more about that?

I was very sad to hear the news from Jack about Maury. While visiting the 658 back in 2011, Maury was one of the crew that really took the time to make Susan and I feel welcome. May God bless his soul and my he Rest in Peace. I'm sure his smile is warming those in Heaven the way his smile warmed our hearts when we met.
