I am trying to find photos of Carlton Byrd, he was a Exec and Skipper in RON 5, then RON 8, 12, and 38. Can anyone tell me what boats he was on, then maybe I can find some photos. I don't know if he is in Knights of the Sea, because I have never seen a copy of the book. I used to go to High School with his grandson, but he could never tell me what boats his grandfather was on. I lost touch with the family and I heard Carlton had a bad stroke, that was 10 years ago.
Thanks.
Take care

Ted

I was lucky to be going thru some of my information which I had lost on my Computer last year. I found some files which I had typed up on different PT Boat Veterans. I found information on Mr. Byrd although limited. Seems that he served on PT 569 while serving with Ron 38. I have it in my files that he has passed away although for some reason I have no date entered. Sorry I could not provide more.

Dear Ted- just found this while doing a random search for Carlton L Byrd. My name is Cullen Carter, and he was my grandfather. My grandfather passed away on April 16, 2006. I don't know the number of his boat, but I don't think this was the number. I'd love to have more information if you know any, or if you have any pictures. Not sure if you still check this, but if so, my email is coc3w@virginia.edu. I would love to hear from you,
Cullen

Many of you have helped over the years with this and I thank you. when I first met "The Byrd Dog" he was a soft spoken southern gentleman, who was "guest Captain for the night" and at the wheel of the Onancock Princess, a dinner cruise boat, you all now know as PT 48.
Today while reading Ted Meridith's book(Ted was a life long friend of Steve's Dad, Hal), I was rewarded with what Ted had written, at the time he was an instructor at Miami Shakedown 1944-1945. on page 200, he relates how in March 1945 they had just finished training with RON 38, which included Charles Mills(RON CO), Huck Wood(RON XO), and Senior Boat officers that were old friends; Gene Foncannon(originally Earl's PT 108 RON 5,2), John Mitchell(took over PT 59 RON 2 from JFK), Ed Ockermann, Carlton Byrd(RON 2, 5, PT 114 RON 6, 8) PT 569, and Bob Shearer(RON 5 PT 104, RON 15). the following Squadron was RON 39, which he has a COMPLETE list of boat captains, does anyone have a complete list for RON 38?
Take care,
TED

Ted,

I can't help you with Ron 38, but I'll do some looking when I can.

Carlton Byrd is not in Knights of the Sea, in case no one else told you so.

Hey Ted,

Don't remember if I've asked you this question before but what was Carlton Byrd's commissioning source? USNA? - ROTC? Midshipman School?

Charlie;
His 2006 obit states Midshipman School University of Chicago. This is another first for me as I thought all of the earlier Melville Class students all went through Northwestern University. I am at work now, I will finish answering this when I get home.

Charlie;
Here is an update:
Carlton was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy and Washington and Lee University, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. In 1946, he married Clare G. Harrington in Newport, R.I.
At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended the University of Chicago for training.
When he headed out on his last patrol Carlton Lee Byrd died at home on Sunday, April 16, 2006.
Take care,

All;
I know this is an old thread, but I am Still learning about Carlton L. "The Byrd Dog" Byrd!
Today while I finished reading Rick Desloge's HELL ON KEELS The Saga of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 12. In the Appendix E is Sam Goddess' RON 12 Crewmembers List, and guess who showed up:
BYRD, Carlton L.,Lt.(jg.), to Dec 43,PT 150(Lady Lucifer).! I knew he was in RON 12, but did not know which boat. WOW! what a career!

So as of this date(7/18/2016) his PT service looks like this: MTBSTC, PT 114(RON 5, 2, 6, 8), PT 150(RON 12), MTBSTC/RON 4, PT 569(RON 38).

I will not be surprised if I find out more especially prior to PT 114, or after RON 38, such as RON 38 XO Staff, or even Base CO/XO in the Philippines somewhere, after the war ended.

Take care,
TED
