After WWII, ten Higgins PTs ended up with the Armada Argentina. One, described as a tourist attraction, but hardly looking like one, is in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego. She's ashore in sand up to the waterline and in sorry shape. http://www.histarmar.com.ar/Cascosabandonados/Lancha%20HigginsUshuaia.htm.

If you have Google Earth, enter USHUAIA in the location window and pan left to the causeway to the airport. The hull is visible in the light area between the catamaran and the pier.

Pretty impressive that the old girl was in service until 1984! The info is dated, but it would be nice to see if their efforts can save the boat. Any idea which boats they were?

Thanks for the translation. Boy they sure built the boats to last, and I hope the boat can and will be saved. Maybe I'll head over and tow it back to the US............

Sounds like they all performed well long after WW2.

NICE PHOTOS! I have also seen photos of another one of these boats beached in the bushes along the river.
Along these story lines, I have also "found" another Higgins, in Balboa, Panama, she operates as a passenger tour boat, and also travels to Toboga almost daily. her name is DONA. I first saw her in 1991, and she is still there. I am going down after Christmas, if I see her I will take some new photos of her.
Take care,

One source I've seen states they are from the 785-790 group (can't be, as these were ELCOs) and 797-808 group. The latter is plausible. Friedman indicates these boats were laid down prior to contract cancellation and I suspect Higgins would have tried to market them. I'll dig further as time passes.

Here's some more info on the fate of the ten boats. http://www.histarmar.com.ar/Cascosabandonados/LanchasHiggins.htm

On Google Earth, enter Bariloche, Isla Huemul in the location window. The wreck of DON LUIS is just to the left of the L shaped pier at the bottom of the island.

The interior is all stripped out. It is used as a canoe and kayak storage for the boat club.
