PT 48 is in the process of being rescued down in Florida by members of "Fleet Obsolete" from Kingston, NY. Tim Ivory is the lead man on this project.

She will join PT 728, 615 and 459 in Kingston in a week or so. This is a huge undertaking. Tim and his crew have put in countless hours building a steel cradle up in Kingston. It was than disassembled and loaded on to a truck and driven down to Florida where it is presently being reassembled under 48's hull. After 48 is safely secured into the cradle it will be loaded on to a tractor trailer for the trip up to Kingston.

There is a little info on the website, http://www.pt728.com/

Also, the entire event is being documented, more to come over the next few days.

Tom;
Nice of you to post an update. I started this Odyssey of restoring PT 48 14 years ago and I will be there also when she is finished and rechristened. This week I have had daily updates and photos from Tim Ivory down in Fruitland, but I did not want to jinx the project by letting the cat out of the bag until they had her on the trailer and they were on the road to Kingston.
Take care,

Ted, as of this morning (12/17) things were going smoothly. I will try to get some of Timmy's photos from Florida up on 728's website before the end of the week.

I watched Timmy and his gang build the cradle that is now being bolted together under 48's hull. Very impressive work to say the least. The reports I am getting is that it fitting up very nicely.

You will see from the photos that this boat needs a LOT of work to bring her back, but these guys are certainly up for the task.

There will be some banners placed around the boat during it's trip telling people what the boat is. I know they have to take secondary routes all the way from Florida to Kingston, so I am sure photos of the boat in transport will be popping up on the internet.

There will also be some video documentary available at some point.

http://www.pt728.com/

I posted a few photos of PT-48's rescue operation down in Florida. They guys have a lot more that will be posted over the next few weeks. This is just a "Sneak Preview". The boat should be en route to Kingston sometime next week I believe.

I THINK I PROBABLY SPEAK FOR A LOT OF THE READERS OF THIS MESSAGE BOARD WHEN I SAY "THANK YOU" TO THE FOLKS AT "FLEET OBSOLETE" FOR DOING FOR PT BOATS WHAT "JURASSIC PARK" DID FOR DINOSAURS. THE PHOTOS OF PT-48 SHOW THAT IT'S IN WORSE SHAPE THAN MOST OF US IMAGINED. THE UPPER DECKING IS COMPLETELY GONE AND THERE'S SUBSTANCIAL DAMAGE TO THE STARBOARD BOW. I'M GLAD ROBERT IANNUCCI HAS BOTH THE ENTHUSIASM AND THE MONEY TO INVEST IN WHAT APPEARS TO BE 77 FEET OF BAD LUMBER.

JUDGING FROM WHAT WAS SPENT TO RESTORE PT-658 UP IN OREGON, THIS LOOKS TO BE ABOUT A MILLION DOLLAR PROJECT. ESPECIALLY IF THEY HOPE TO GET HER UNDERWAY AGAIN. I'D LOVE TO BE DOING IT MYSELF, BUT I JUST DON'T THINK I CAN HIDE AN EXTRA MILLION DOLLARS FROM MY WIFE FOR "HOBBY EXPENSES".

Ross;
You maybe right, but look at it this way, once she is finished, she will practically be a new boat again, just as she was in 1946 after MTBRTU finished repairing her, when she was used as a training aid to teach the MTB carpenters how to repair PT's. Hey, she does not look that bad for a poor negelected hot little princess who is 67 years and 3 months YOUNG!
In a couple of years she will be back to her beautiful old self again. Have faith!
Take care,

Ted,

How are they fixed for drawings for the 48? I have copies of some of the ELCO drawings for this series, including the lines and sections for the hull and the superstructure. If they need them, I can make copies.

PT 48 Update

I just got off the phone with Tim. The boat is loaded and ready to go. Due to some oversize load permits that are needed, the boat won't be leaving Florida until sometime after 1/6/09.

When we find out the exact route that will be taken, we will post updates on this thread. If anyone happens to be in the area and can get some shots, we would love to post them on our website.

You can e-mail them to PT728captain@yahoo.com

Merry Christmas!

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY SO MANY OF THE SURVIVING PT BOATS HAVE BEEN CUT DOWN TO 65 FEET OVER THE YEARS?

65 ft was the size the coast guard used to restrict the use of certain vessels. boats less than 65ft had much less restriction for licensing.
i think fishing boat doings commercial charters would benefit the most for being 65ft or less. p.t. were cheap to modify(cut down) and gave a lot of folks a chance to get into the boat busness. back then i don't think they even needed a captains license for boats less than 65ft.

This is great news guys! I'm excited to hear about all of it. Work and the impeding marriage and move have kept me busy, so I've been away from the message board.

Tim/Tom - when you know the route, please post it here. I'd love to go get a shot of her! And depending on which way she goes, I'd bring along a PT vet who'd get a kick out of seeing that.

Rob Ianucci called me last week to make sure I knew what was going on and to ask for general help in the Fleet Obsolete efforts. The next nine months are the busiest I've been in a decade but I am still interested in doing my part with what needs to be done.

Tim - thanks again for your hospitality when I visited NY last June - it was a great time. I posted some of the pictures I took in a four-part post. Here was the NY photos:

Clarification

Sorry if I mislead some of you guys. The "new" website I was referring to was just a new website for PT 728, The current one is horrible . I have only been posting some photos of PT 48 on there as a favor to Tim and the guys doing all the work.

I will continue to do so until our new historian takes over and gets a new site for PT 48 off the ground.

At present we have 2 versions of 728's website out there and a interim site for Fleet Obsolete. We'll get this straightened out one of these days!

Tim,

Here are some examples of the ELCO plans for PT45-48, 59-68 I have:

[IMAGE]http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i204/alross2/pt48_0001.jpg[/IMAGE]

[IMAGE]http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i204/alross2/pt48_0002.jpg[/IMAGE]

[IMAGE]http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i204/alross2/pt48_0003.jpg[/IMAGE]

I have a lot more material on this group, the 20-44 series, and the BPT 1-10 (ex-PT49-58) series and am happy to share it with you guys. However, there is a catch. If you're going to do to PT48 what was done to the 728, I won't. While I know you guys didn't create that abortion from the original Vosper configuration, I don't want to contribute to that kind of gross misrepresentation of historic artifacts.

HI AL, THANK YOU FOR THE CONSIDERATION IN SHARING OF PLANS. I KNOW THEY TAKE MUCH EFFORT TO COMPILE.
THIS IS THE KIND OF SUPPORT NEEDED TO BRING THE P.T.48 PROJECT TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A MOMENT TO CLEAR THE AIR ABOUT PT.728 AND HOW WE REPRESENT.

THOSE THAT KNOW US AND OUR OPERATION PERSONALLY , KNOW THAT WE DON'T PRETEND PT 728 IS ANY THING MORE THAN THE MOVIE PROP THAT IT HAS BECOME.

NOR DO WE SUGEST THAT THE VOSPER (IN ANY CONFIGURATION) HAD ANY GREAT DISTINCTION IN U.S. PT BOAT HISTORY. BUT I WILL SAY THIS.

EQUALLY TO THE EFFORTS OF THOSE THAT SERVED ON THE BATTLE FIELD , ARE THE FOLKS THAT STUD AT THE HOME FRONT,WORKING, SHARING, SACRIFICING SO THAT WE WOULD WIN THE WAR. THEY PRODUCED THE TOOLS NEEDED TO DO THE JOB.

SOME OF THOSE PEOPLE HAD WORKED TO BUILD THE VOSPER MOTOR TORPEDO BOAT TO BE USED BY OUR ALLIES FOR THE SAME WAR EFFORT.

NOW, FOR WHAT EVER REASON THE PREVIOUS OWNER'S DECIDED THAT PT.728 NEEDED TO LOOK LIKE AN ELCO, DOES NOT MATTER.

WHAT WE DO IN OUR MISSION TO PRESERVE HISTORY. IS TO GIVE PEOPLE A CHANCE TO "EXPERIENCE" FOR A MOMENT,THE FEEL OF BEING ON THE DECK OF A P.T.BOAT UNDER WAY.

THAT NEED TO HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE, AND CONNECT WITH THERE FATHERS, UNCLES AND GRAND FATHERS,IS IN ITS SELF, THE RESPECT THAT WE OFFER BACK TO P.T. VETERANS.

THAT'S ALL WE HAVE RIGHT NOW. AND WE DO IT WELL.

TO DATE, THERE ARE ABOUT 13 KNOWN PT HULLS LEFT TO EXIST.

FLEET OBSOLETE OWNS AND MAINTAINS FOUR OF THOSE HULLS AT GREAT EXPENCE. THE ONLY RETURN ON THAT INVESTMENT COMES FROM P.T. 728.

I MY SELF, DO MY BEST TO WELCOME PARTICIPATION INTO THESE PROJECTS. I HAVE NEVER MADE STIPULATIONS.

RESPECTFULLY YOURS

TIM

Tim:

First let me say that I think the work you folks are doing is outstanding. Having one boat to deal with is a work in progress and you folks have a multitude of them. It takes a very good mix of people to see that these projects move forward. With that being said, I have contacted Rob on several occassions. One was for the possible purchase of an original Elco Griddle, and the other for a 20MM Cannon. I also showed interest in possibly bringing my Exhibit to your location, in an attempt to better your plan of bringing people to your location. I never heard back from anyone. I was promised a reply numerous times (calling your headquarters and leaving messages) with none being returned.

I then tried to E-Mail both yourself and Tom about some thoughts I had on fund rasing efforts. To date, it has been three weeks or more with no reply. This is not the first time that this has happened. I certainly realize that people are very busy, but it has left a bad taste in my mouth. I have gone out of my way to try and make myself available to your cause, and being treated this way is not good. I hope that the people that answer phones for you folks are getting these maessages out, and if they are, a simple call back or E-Mail is te least that could be done. I hope to make it out there this summer to see the boats, because I really beleive in the work you are doing. I did not want to come here and do this on this forum, but it seems that you folks read it, and answer most people, although I have tried that as well with no response. Keep up the good work you are doing. No doubt all of the hard work will pay off, when the boats are running under their own power. One only needs to look at the work PT Boats Inc, and Save the PT Boat have done to know it can be accomplished with wonderful and rewarding results.

YOU MAY HAVE STARTED AT THE WRONG END. I KNOW THAT END SEEMS TO MAKE MORE SENSE. BUT ITS NOT ALWAYS AFFECTIVE.

TOM HAS POSTED CONTACT INFO OR YOU MAY POST YOUR NUMBER AND ILL CALL YOU.

Hello Tim and Tom and Frank,
First of all I want to thank you guys for doing a wonderful job of saving so many PT Boats. While I never really understood why Bill B changed the 728 boat to look like an Elco, I think Rob Ianucci and you guys have done a great job of taking the hand that was dealt to you and making a successful operation. Taking the general public out on tours like you do is a good thing, and is something that will increase the general publics appreciation for all PT Boats and the people who crewed them and the people who built them.

Secondly, I have personally been involved in restoring the Higgins PT 658 in Portland Oregon, and our whole crew would like to express our congratulations and encouragement to your crew there in Kingston NY. You guys have really "taken the bull by the horns" (so to speak) by taking on so many derelict vessels in dire need of restoration. Any one of the boats you guys have warrants 100% of your efforts, especially PT48. You also have what the PT459, and the PT486? and a 63' AVR I think right? If there is anything we can do to help you guys, even if it to share resources or contacts or "on the job" operational knowledge, we would like to help you out if we can.

Tom, I think the entire Message Board here would appreciate seeing more photos of your operations posted on line. We all are looking forward to your website improvements also. The Save the PT Boat Inc website has been improved over the last several years and it is amazing how much interest and assistance it has generated from all over the world! Make sure you put a page listing items that you need, our similar page has generated stuff that we thought was impossible to find literally appearing "Out of the woodwork" from interested readers worldwide.
OK I will get off my soapbox. PS by the way I found this phoito and sent it to your group last year but never got any response of a wartime picture of PT459, with a rescue net right before D-Day in England. I wanted to make sure you guys got it.

Tim,

I'll start scanning the plans for PT45-48 and get them onto a CD for you. Plz send me a "snail mail" address to which to send it. I have a lot more stuff that may be of interest (like the manual for the MK17 mount and an illustrated ELCO parts manual), so make me a list of what you guys need.

THE PICTURES THAT TOM POSTED ON THE 728 SIGHT SHOWS A ORIGINAL COMPOSIT STRINGER. THAT PICTURE MAKES ME REALY HAPPY. THATS WHY I HAD HIM UP IT UP.
HARDWARE PLANS WILL NOT BE IMPORTANT YET. BUT COCKPIT, DAY HOUSE AND TURRET(BARBETTS) . THEY ARE COMPLICATED STRUCTURES AND WILL REQUIRE LONG STUDY ALSO.

Hello Tom,
About the photo:
I was at the PT Boats Inc National Reunion in 2006 in Spokane Washington and took a digital photo closeup of that 3x5 print which was posted on a display board at the reunion. I think PT Boats Inc may have the original picture, so maybe just list them as the credit. I certainly dont want or need any credit for it. Sorry thats all I have on the photo. But I figure it was the only picture I have ever seen of your boat, so you guys should have it.

Congratulations to you and TIM IVORY and of course Rob Ianucci for the great job on moving PT48 and finally beginnning the restoration process in earnest.

PS By the way Tom, have you considered adding a page to you website callled "LIST OF WANTED ITEMS"? I would strongly recommend adding one. You can tap into a large pool of resources that way.

Jerry,

Yes I am going to take you up on your advice of adding a "Wish List" page to our PT 728 site.

The contents of that list would be more of Timmy's part of the operation, so I will have him start to put something together so I can post it for him.

The next page I want to tackle on the site is the "Links" page. The photo page will probably be the last one as I have loads of them to choose from.

Thanks again for all of your advice
